Crampon and Ice Axe Technique for Glacier Travel

Two pieces of equipment define glacier travel above all others: crampons and the ice axe. Together they address the two primary hazards of moving on ice — the risk of slipping on the steeply angled, hard glacial surface, and the consequence if a slip is not immediately arrested. Neither tool requires extreme physical strength or athletic ability to use effectively, but both require understanding and practice. Putting on crampons for the first time on a gentle slope with a patient guide is very different from discovering their characteristics mid-route in deteriorating conditions.

This guide covers the fundamentals: how crampons work and should be fitted, how to walk in them without snagging or falling, and how the ice axe functions in its various roles — as a balance aid, a self-arrest tool, and a glacier travel anchor. These skills form the foundation of safe glacier travel worldwide, from beginner-accessible walks to more technically demanding mountaineering.

Understanding Crampons

Crampons are metal frames fitted with hardened steel points that penetrate ice and firn to provide traction. They attach to boots through a system of straps, binding plates, or bail systems, and it is critical that the attachment matches the boot type: rigid crampons with front bail binding systems are designed for stiff mountaineering boots; flexible crampons with strap binding systems work with a wider range of footwear including flexible hiking boots.

The points of a crampon vary by design. General mountaineering crampons have ten or twelve points oriented downward and backward, with the front two or four points pointing forward for use on steep terrain. For general glacier walking on moderate slopes, the downward points provide the working surface. For steep ice or hard snow faces, front-pointing technique (using only the two or four forward-pointing teeth, with the heel dropped) provides security on vertical terrain.

Fitting crampons correctly is not optional. A crampon that shifts during use is a crampon that fails at the critical moment. On a strap binding system, tighten the straps firmly but without cutting off circulation; on a bail binding system, ensure both the front bail locks over the welt of the boot toe and the rear bail clicks securely over the heel. Before walking, stand in place, flex the ankle, and check that the crampon does not rotate or shift. Snow and ice can ball up (accumulate in clumps) between the points, reducing their effectiveness: anti-balling plates — rubber or plastic inserts fitted between the crampon frame and the points — reduce this, and clearing balled snow by tapping the boot with the ice axe shaft is standard practice.

Walking Technique on Glacier Ice

The most common technique mistake for first-time crampon users is walking on the toe points alone, as though balancing on high heels, rather than planting all downward-pointing points simultaneously. On flat or gently sloped ice, the correct technique is the flat-foot method: keep the sole of the boot as parallel as possible to the slope, lowering the heel to plant all points. This requires a lower centre of gravity and a more deliberate gait than normal walking but delivers the maximum number of points in contact with the ice.

On moderate slopes, the French technique (also called pied a plat, or flat-footing) extends this principle: the foot is turned sideways to the slope, allowing all points to bite even as the angle increases. On steeper slopes, the foot can be angled in a hybrid position, with the inner edge planted on the uphill side. The German technique, or front-pointing, is reserved for steep ice faces and is not relevant for general glacier travel.

Crampons alter your gait in ways that are initially disorienting. The wider stance required to avoid snagging crampon points in gaiters or boot uppers takes practice. Walking through soft snow versus hard ice requires different amounts of downward pressure. On broken terrain with rock and ice mixed, lifting the foot cleanly to avoid catching points on rock edges prevents trips. These adjustments become instinctive with experience.

The Ice Axe: Roles and Technique

The ice axe is one of the most versatile tools in the mountaineer's kit. In its most basic function, it serves as a walking staff, held in the uphill hand with the pick pointing backward and the adze forward — the standard self-arrest position. The spike at the lower end is driven into the snow or ice for support on ascents and can be used to probe terrain ahead.

The adze — the flat, chisel-like blade opposite the pick — is used for step cutting in hard snow or ice and for scooping loose snow. Step cutting has been largely replaced by crampons for most glacier travel but remains relevant in situations where crampons are unavailable or where a specific step is needed to assist a less experienced climber.

The pick — the curved, toothed blade at the top of the axe — is the key component for self-arrest. If a climber slips and begins to slide, self-arrest involves rolling onto the stomach, pushing the adze end of the axe away from the body (to avoid impaling oneself on the spike), and simultaneously pressing the pick into the snow or ice while keeping the legs raised. The combination of pick penetration and body friction decelerates the slide. Self-arrest is a technique that must be practised on a safe practice slope before relying on it in real conditions; it becomes less effective on very hard ice and should not be treated as a universal guarantee.

Rope Team Travel

On glaciers with crevasse hazard, a rope team of two or three climbers provides safety against falling into a hidden crevasse. Each member of the rope team carries coils of rope at the shoulder to manage the distance between climbers; a fallen member's arrest depends on the others stopping immediately and dropping their body weight onto the ice axe to hold the fall. The distance between climbers should be sufficient to prevent two people from being on the same snow bridge simultaneously but short enough to allow the standing team members to hold a fall — typically six to twelve metres.

Practising crevasse rescue — hauling a fallen member out of a crevasse using pulley systems improvised from the rope and ice axes — is strongly recommended before undertaking glaciated terrain without a professional guide.
