Ablation Zones Explained

The ablation zone is the lower part of a glacier — the part where ice loss exceeds gain. It is where the dirt is, where the crevasses gape, where the tourist tracks go. Understanding what you are looking at when you stand on the ablation zone is one of the most useful things a glacier visitor can learn.

What "ablation" actually means

Ablation is any process that removes mass from the glacier surface: melt, sublimation (ice evaporating directly to vapour), and calving where the glacier ends in water. In temperate glaciers, melt dominates. In cold polar glaciers, sublimation can be the main loss mechanism.

What ablation zones look like

Why visitors care

Almost all touristic glacier walks happen in the ablation zone. The accumulation zone is too steep, too snowy and too crevassed for safe foot travel without skis. The ablation zone is also where the historical retreat is visible — markers, postcards and old photographs all show this section.

Equilibrium line

The boundary between accumulation and ablation zones is the equilibrium line (ELA). Its altitude is the single most important number in glaciology — a glacier whose ELA rises year after year is shrinking. Most alpine glaciers have ELAs that have risen 100-300 m since 1980.

Reading the surface

On a guided walk, ask your guide to point out: this year's snow line, last year's snow line (often a dust band), the largest moulin in the section, and a crevasse from the surface to where it tapers shut at depth. These four features tell most of the glacier's story.
