Top 10 Glaciers in Chile
Chile contains a larger share of the world's non-polar glaciated surface than any country outside Russia and Canada, concentrated almost entirely in Patagonia between the 46th and 55th parallels south. The southern and northern Patagonian ice fields are the dominant ice masses; additional glaciers appear in the Magallanes region and the Andes as far north as the Atacama. The Carretera Austral — a 1,240 km gravel road through Chilean Patagonia — is the logistical spine of access to the northern concentrations.
1. Grey Glacier, Magallanes
The Grey Glacier descends from the southern Patagonian ice field into Lago Grey within Torres del Paine National Park, presenting a 6 km wide calving face with ice cliffs up to 35 metres high. It is the most accessible large glacier in Chilean Patagonia: the W Trek and Circuit routes both pass the lake shore where icebergs from recent calving events drift in brilliant blue-green water. Boat tours from Punta Arenas (via Puerto Natales) cross the lake to approach the ice face. The glacier covers approximately 270 km2 and has been retreating at its margins while remaining relatively stable at the main calving face.
2. Pio XI (Bruggen) Glacier, Aysen
The Pio XI Glacier — also known as Bruggen — is the largest glacier in the southern hemisphere outside Antarctica, covering approximately 1,265 km2. It is one of the very few glaciers in the world that has been advancing over recent decades, pushing forward into Lago Greve at roughly 1 to 2 metres per day. The advance is attributed to surging dynamics rather than positive mass balance: the ice is thickening at altitude and delivering excess mass to the terminus faster than ablation can remove it. Access is by boat through the Chilean fjords from Puerto Montt; no road penetrates to the glacier vicinity.
3. San Rafael Glacier, Aysen
San Rafael Glacier in the Laguna San Rafael National Park calves into a small, enclosed lagoon, creating a dense iceberg field in a setting ringed by temperate rainforest — one of the most scenic glacier environments on earth. The glacier is one of the lowest-latitude tidewater glaciers in the world at approximately 46 degrees south. It has been retreating markedly: the calving face has moved back hundreds of metres since the 1980s, and the lagoon that now exists in the former terminal zone has grown correspondingly. The Skorpios III cruise provides the primary tourist access; air taxi flights from Coyhaique are the alternative.
4. O'Higgins Glacier, Aysen
The O'Higgins Glacier drains from the southern Patagonian ice field through a long fjord to reach Lago O'Higgins at the border with Argentina. With a length of approximately 66 km, it is one of the longest glaciers in the Americas. Boat tours from Villa O'Higgins at the end of the Carretera Austral cross the lake to a viewpoint within a few hundred metres of the calving front. The face is approximately 3 km wide and 60 to 80 metres above water. Retreat has been around 6 km since the 1970s.
5. Tyndall Glacier, Magallanes
The Tyndall Glacier is the second-largest glacier in Torres del Paine National Park after Grey, draining to Lago Tyndall on the less-visited eastern side of the park. It is accessible on the Torres del Paine Circuit trek and provides an ice-front viewpoint without the crowds of the W route. The surrounding landscape is heavily glacially sculpted, with the Valle del Frances and the hanging glaciers above providing additional visual drama.
6. Marconi Glacier, Santa Cruz / Aysen border
The Marconi Glacier in the El Chalten sector provides the primary access route onto the southern Patagonian ice field for experienced mountaineers via the Marconi Pass (1,100 m). From the pass, the view extends across the full expanse of the ice field — one of the great glacier panoramas in South America. The glacier approach requires some glacier travel skills but is frequently crossed by guided groups and experienced independent trekkers heading to the ice field.
7. San Quintin Glacier, Aysen
The San Quintin Glacier is the largest outlet of the northern Patagonian ice field, flowing westward to a broad proglacial lake and eventually to the sea through the San Tadeo and Corcovado systems. Its calving face is wider than San Rafael's but far less visited due to access difficulties. Monitoring by the Centro de Estudios Cientificos records significant area loss — the glacier has retreated several kilometres since the 1980s.
8. Bernardo Glacier, Magallanes
The Bernardo Glacier drains from the southern Patagonian ice field into Bernardo Fjord in the Bernardo O'Higgins National Park. It is accessible by boat tour from Puerto Natales on multi-day fjord itineraries. The calving face is approximately 2 km wide and produces a continuous procession of small icebergs into the fjord. Sea-kayaking expeditions sometimes camp in the vicinity, which is otherwise roadless.
9. Jorge Montt Glacier, Aysen
Jorge Montt Glacier has been one of the fastest-retreating glaciers in Patagonia in recent decades, losing approximately 19 km of length between 1898 and 2014. The terminal fjord that now occupies the former glacier bed barely existed a century ago. Research from the Centro de Estudios Cientificos documents the Jorge Montt as among the most significant case studies in Patagonian glacier retreat and fjord genesis.
10. Bruggen (alternative access)
The Bruggen designation also covers the Greve system adjacent to the main Pio XI lobe. The multi-arm character of the Pio XI / Bruggen complex makes it the most voluminous advancing glacier system in the world outside sub-polar regions and a subject of ongoing dynamic glaciology research. Overflight from Puerto Montt by small aircraft is the most practical access for researchers and serious glacier travellers.
Carretera Austral access points
The Carretera Austral (Route 7) between Puerto Montt and Villa O'Higgins passes within reach of the San Rafael lagoon ferry junction at Puerto Cisnes or Coyhaique, the O'Higgins road end at Villa O'Higgins, and multiple hanging glacier viewpoints in the Carretera margin terrain. The road is gravel for most of its length and requires a 4WD vehicle or a hardened adventure vehicle; ferry crossings at several points are mandatory.

Research and conservation in Chilean Patagonia
The Centro de Estudios Cientificos (CECs) in Valdivia is the primary scientific body monitoring Chilean Patagonian glaciers. Their research has documented the retreat of the northern and southern Patagonian ice fields through satellite imagery, field measurements, and mass balance modelling. CECs data is incorporated into the WGMS global database and contributes to IPCC sea-level rise assessments.
The northern Patagonian ice field has lost approximately 1.0 km2 per year of area since the 1970s, and the southern field a further 1.5 km2 per year, with losses accelerating after 2000. The Jorge Montt and Colonia glaciers have been particularly dynamic, calving into deepening fjords at rates that have surprised researchers.
Puerto Natales and Torres del Paine logistics
Puerto Natales (population approximately 20,000) is the base for Torres del Paine National Park and the access point for Patagonian fjord cruises. LAN Chile and LATAM serve Punta Arenas (250 km south), with bus connections to Puerto Natales. The park entrance fee is significant — one of the highest in the Chilean national park system — and accommodation around the W Trek and Circuit routes fills months in advance for the November to March season.
