Top 10 Glaciers in France
French glaciers cluster in three main massifs: the Mont Blanc range above Chamonix, the Ecrins in Isere/Hautes-Alpes, and the Vanoise west of the Italian border. Together they hold around 200 named ice bodies. Many are genuinely visitable on day trips from valley towns, which makes France one of the easiest European countries for first-time glacier visitors.
1. Mer de Glace
The most famous French glacier, draining off the Mont Blanc massif into the Chamonix valley. The Montenvers cog railway from Chamonix town centre deposits visitors directly on its moraine and at the seasonal ice cave.
2. Argentiere
Mont Blanc's other big northern outlet, above the village of Argentiere. The Grands Montets cable car gives front-row views and the start of serious skiing.
3. Bossons
The most spectacular hanging glacier in the Alps, dropping from the Mont Blanc summit cone to within a kilometre of Chamonix-Sud. Best seen from the Mont aux Charmis viewpoint walk.
4. Taconnaz
Adjacent to the Bossons, with massive earth-banked defensive structures in the valley to catch ice avalanches. The dam itself is a sight.
5. Tre la Tete
A long valley glacier in the Mont Blanc southern foothills, reached from the Contamines side. Quiet, deep and surprisingly preserved.
6. Glacier Blanc
The largest glacier of the Ecrins massif, accessed from the Pre de Madame Carle car park. A short walk leads to a balcony view; the Refuge du Glacier Blanc is a popular overnight base.
7. Glacier Noir
Glacier Blanc's debris-covered sibling on the other side of the Pre de Madame Carle valley. A starker, more "Himalayan" look than its white neighbour.
8. Vanoise — Glacier de la Grande Casse
The headline glacier of the Vanoise National Park, on the highest summit of the Savoie. Approach from the Pralognan side via the Felix Faure hut.
9. Vanoise — Pelve / Mont Pelve
A small but classic ski-touring glacier, traversed on the route from Pralognan toward the Italian border.
10. Glacier de Talefre
A high glacier above the Mer de Glace, used as a quieter approach to the Couvercle hut. Spectacular views back down the Mer de Glace.
When to go
The Mer de Glace ice grotto runs late June to mid-September. Glacier walking on Bossons and Argentiere is mid-June to late September. Ski touring in the Ecrins and Vanoise is best mid-April through May.
