Glacier Archaeology
Glacier archaeology — sometimes called "ice patch archaeology" — studies the artefacts and human remains exposed as glaciers and permanent snow patches melt. The cold, anaerobic ice preserves organic material extraordinarily well; pieces of leather, wood and even feathers can emerge as intact as the day they were lost.
Otzi the Iceman
The most famous find: a 5 300-year-old Copper Age man discovered in 1991 in a melted-out trench on the Italian-Austrian border. His clothing, tools and the arrowhead in his back told a story that revised European prehistory.
What is being found
Across the Alps, Andes, Norway and North America, glacier archaeologists are recovering:
- Hunting tools. Arrows, bows, atlatls — wooden shafts that decay in soil but survive in ice.
- Clothing and footwear. Leather and wool fragments with weave patterns and dyes intact.
- Pack-animal gear. Saddles, ropes, horseshoes.
- Human remains. Both individual frozen bodies and bone fragments.
- Travel routes. Mountain passes once used regularly that have yielded centuries of dropped or abandoned material.
How the work happens
Field teams race the melt. Each summer a roster of recently exposed ice patches is visited; finds are documented in situ before removal. The Innlandet Glacier Archaeology Program (Norway) and the Yukon ice patch project (Canada) are global leaders.
Why it matters
These finds open windows on human activity at altitudes and seasons where no other archaeological evidence survives. They reveal trade routes, hunting techniques, climate adaptations and the lives of ordinary people across thousands of years.
What visitors should not do
Picking up artefacts is illegal in most countries. Photograph the find with GPS metadata and report to the local heritage authority — do not move it.
